Troubleshooting Heating And Cooling Appliances

Air conditioning units are usually used for cooling, but there are many HVAC systems that do both heating and cooling, and these are popular in areas that have hot summers and cold winters. If your HVAC system breaks down, then it may take a few days to get it repaired, which can be quite irritating, and inconvenient for you and your family! The good news is that a lot of the time, when air conditioning units fail, the problem is actually relatively simple.

Problems such as broken thermostat sensors, broken relays and capacitors in the condenser, dead motors and broken fans account for a lot of the issues with air conditioning. Other issues are sometimes caused by clogged filters, or leaky coolant.

Some of the issues mentioned above are ones that you can fix yourself, but others will take a little more care and expertise, and may be better performed by experienced technicians.

Some parts cost just a few dollars, while other things such as replacement motors could cost $150 or more. As a rule of thumb, if your HVAC appliance is more than eight years old, it is often better to replace it than try to fix the parts, because finding identical replacement parts will be problematic.

If your air conditioning or HVAC unit fails, firstly, look at the symptoms. Are any fans spinning up? Does the condensor sound like it's working? Are the lights coming on? Is there any air flow at all (even weak air flow)? This will give you an idea of where the problem may lie, so that you can focus on that specific part of the system. If the unit is completely dead, it could be something as simple as a blown fuse. If the motor has failed, then it's an expensive job to put it right.
